Current CPSC API returns 420 calendar-year 2025 recall records

A query of CPSC's official Recall Data API for recall dates from 1 January through 31 December 2025 returned 420 records when checked on 23 September 2026, not 422.

What the evidence says

The count comes from the live official API using its RecallDateStart and RecallDateEnd parameters. All 420 returned records carried 2025 recall dates, spanning 2 January to 18 December in the result checked. Because CPSC maintains a live dataset, later corrections or revisions can change the result; a reproducible publication should preserve the query URL, retrieval date and preferably a dated snapshot.

A recall-record count is not the same as the number of affected units, unique product models, injuries or level of consumer risk. The current official data also do not, without a consistently run historical series, support calling 2025 a record year.

Why it matters

The useful distinction

Using the official query and stating the method prevents a headline number from being detached from a changing dataset. It also avoids treating every recall record as equivalent in scale or severity.
