EU campaign finds a gap between helmet performance and full compliance

In an EU-funded test of 100 sports helmets, 79 passed the laboratory performance checks, while 30 met both the performance and formal requirements assessed by the campaign.

What the primary source says

Nine participating EU and EFTA market-surveillance authorities sampled 70 helmets for cycling, skateboarding or roller-skating and 30 for skiing or snowboarding. The products were sampled in Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Malta, the Netherlands and Sweden; 84 were bought online. The Commission reports that 65 models had a formal issue involving markings or documentation, and 70 had at least one performance or formal non-compliance.

Authorities assessed 18 failures as serious risk. The reported measures included five market withdrawals, eight sales bans and 14 consumer recalls, with follow-up continuing in other cases. These figures describe the products sampled for this campaign, not all helmets on the market.

Why it matters

The useful distinction

Protective performance and traceability information are separate parts of compliance. Buyers still need the right fit, instructions and conformity information, and should follow any product-specific recall advice.
