New Zealand recall: clickable toy key chain exposes button battery to children

A toy key chain given away in New Zealand was recalled because its button battery was not properly secured and lacked safety warnings.

What the primary source says

Product Safety New Zealand published a recall on 18 September 2026 for a four-button clickable toy key chain given as a free gift by Kingdomcity on 6 September. The product has keyboard-style buttons marked S, O, N and a crown image that light up when pressed. The regulator says the button battery may be accessible to children and the product has no battery safety warnings.

If a child swallows or inserts a button battery, serious injury or death can follow quickly. Product Safety New Zealand says to stop using the toy immediately, keep it away from children and not attempt to remove the battery. Return it to Kingdomcity Auckland or dispose of it safely under local battery guidance and tell Kingdomcity once disposal has occurred.

Why it matters

The useful distinction

Small novelty items and promotional gifts can carry the same battery risks as toys sold in shops. The New Zealand notice gives a clear example of why battery compartments and warnings should be checked before giving products to children.
