TU shopper bags recalled over excessive phthalates

Three TU shopper bags sold through Argos and Sainsbury's were recalled after OPSS found excessive phthalates, a serious chemical risk under UK REACH rules.

What the primary source says

The Office for Product Safety and Standards published a serious-risk recall on 28 September 2026 for three TU shopper bags sold through Argos and Sainsbury's. The brown, tan and black bags are identified by their SKU and item numbers in the notice. OPSS says the bags contain excessive phthalates and do not comply with the REACH Enforcement Regulations 2008; exposure may harm children's reproductive system.

Consumers should stop using the affected bags and return them to the nearest relevant store for a full refund. This is a UK recall of the specified bag identifiers, not a finding that every TU bag is affected.

Why it matters

The useful distinction

Chemical restrictions can apply to components that are not obvious from a product listing or photograph. The SKU and item numbers are more reliable than colour or appearance alone when checking an online or second-hand purchase.
