Japan recalls selected Nichicon ESS-T3 home battery units after fire and smoke

Japan's METI has recorded a Nichicon inspection-and-replacement recall for selected ESS-T3 home battery units after fire and smoke linked to battery-cell thermal runaway. Eight battery-unit model numbers are listed; owners should check their serial number with Nichicon rather than assume every ESS-T3 unit is affected.

What the primary source says

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) records a recall dated 24 September 2026 for Nichicon lithium storage batteries used in the ESS-T3 series of home tri-hybrid storage systems. METI says fire and smoke following battery-cell thermal runaway prompted inspection and replacement of affected batteries.

The listed battery-unit models are ES-T3MCK, ES-T3XCK, ES-T3S1, ES-T3L1, ES-T3M1, ES-T3X1, ES-T3SS and ES-T3LS. METI reports 15,534 affected units and a sales period from 11 April 2022 to 24 September 2026. Not every unit bearing one of these model numbers is necessarily affected: Nichicon provides an official serial-number checker and arranges the inspection and replacement. Owners in Japan should check the exact battery-unit serial number and follow Nichicon's instructions. This Japanese action is not evidence of a UK recall.

Why it matters

The useful distinction

The ESS-T3 series name alone is not enough to identify an affected home battery. The eight unit model numbers and official serial-number checker allow a more reliable match before arranging inspection and replacement.
