CPSC urges checks for previously recalled Central Sprinkler heads

A new US CPSC alert urges homes, care facilities and other buildings to replace recalled Central Sprinkler heads that may still fail to activate in a fire.

What the primary source says

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Tyco Fire Products issued a safety alert on 24 September 2026 about previously recalled Central Sprinkler fire sprinkler heads that may still be installed in homes, residential facilities and commercial buildings. The affected heads were made from the mid-1970s to June 2001 and were first recalled in 2001. Mineral, salt and other contamination can degrade the rubber O-ring seals and prevent activation during a fire.

The alert followed a fatal 2025 care-facility fire that involved unreplaced recalled heads. CPSC and Tyco urge building owners, managers and responsible organisations to inspect systems, check maintenance records and arrange replacement by a qualified fire-protection professional. This is an updated safety alert about an older recall, not a new product recall.

Why it matters

The useful distinction

Old installed products can remain a live safety issue when recall replacement programmes are incomplete, especially in buildings housing vulnerable people.
